Travel Habits
Stay primed while on the road
There’s an underrated skill you learn while being a collegiate athlete. It’s embedded in you early on and you receive constant advice and tips in the process.
What is it?
Healthy Travel.
You are on the road to perform. You must stay primed and keep yourself in the zone no matter how difficult the travel is.
You have coaches and athletic trainers in your ear reminding you to do the little habits that will keep you ready to perform when it matters most.
And as we move on from the sport, we have more healthy and positive habits than we realize.
So if we’re traveling for business or pleasure, we have a wonderful foundation to build from.
We know what it takes to stay healthy and equipped to succeed. And when the body is healthy, the mind follows.
Below, I’ll share some actionable tips to staying healthy and primed while on the road. The habits are simple, but they’ll put you ahead of most of the population.

Healthy Travel Habits
Stay Hydrated:
Drink plenty of water throughout your journey to stay hydrated, especially if you're flying or spending time in air-conditioned environments. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it regularly. Keeping a few electrolyte packets on you can work wonders as well.
Eat Balanced Meals:
Choose nutritious foods that provide sustained energy, such as lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Opt for balanced meals and snacks to keep hunger at bay and maintain stable blood sugar levels. I’m a huge fan of places such as Roots, Chipotle, Cava, etc. to keep it clean and lean!
Pack Healthy Snacks:
Bring along portable snacks like nuts, seeds, fruit, granola bars, or veggie sticks to avoid relying on airport or convenience store options, which may be high in sugar and unhealthy fats. And you’ll even save more money!
Stretch and Move Regularly:
Combat stiffness and promote circulation by incorporating stretching and light exercises into your travel routine. Take short walks during layovers or breaks, and perform simple stretches for major muscle groups. If you’re driving, take advantage of stopping for gas and get some movement and stretches in!
Practice Good Posture:
Maintain proper posture, especially during long periods of sitting. Sit upright with your feet flat on the floor, and use lumbar support if needed. Avoid slouching or hunching over electronic devices. You back will thank you!
Stay Active:
Explore your destination on foot or by bike whenever possible. Seek out opportunities for physical activity, such as hiking, swimming, or taking fitness classes. Use hotel gyms or outdoor spaces for workouts.
Prioritize Sleep:
Aim to maintain a regular sleep schedule, even while traveling. Create a comfortable sleep environment, minimize disruptions, and consider using earplugs or an eye mask if needed to promote restful sleep. New environments can be very tough on the body so do all you can to minimize the negative effects!
Manage Stress:
Practice stress-relief techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness to stay calm and centered during travel. Plan ahead, stay organized, and be flexible in case of unexpected delays or changes.
If you can implement a few of these habits, you’ll surprise yourself with how good you feel for the trip. And the steps aren’t too difficult. Take on a few or take on all, I promise your body and mind will thank you! Happy travels 😁
