The Secret to Discipline
Turn that brain off
Hello Friend,
You know that feeling that rears its nasty head when we’re heading into a challenging task, prepping for our workout for the day, walking into a tough conversation, etc.
It tells us, “You don’t need to do this, you’re already ahead.” “You need some rest.” “Don’t start this now.” “We can pick back up next week.”
Then…we decide to skip.
We decide to choose comfort over growth.
We decide we’d rather hit the couch and throw on a marathon of Friends.

We’ve all been there. But what’s the issue? The work doesn’t care how we’re feeling.
The work doesn’t care how hard of a week we’ve had.
The work doesn’t care.
Results arrive as a result of the work. No matter what the mind is repeating to us over and over.
You want to lose weight and reveal that 6 pack? Improve your relationship? Hit that net worth goal? Get out of debt?
You have to do the right things day in day out that add up to the goal.
These goals will never care how you feel. By seeking that quick hit of comfort in skipping the challenge, you are digging yourself into a deeper hole.

So, it’s time to alter your mind. It’s time to refocus.

Instead of giving in to the comfort and ditching your tasks, refocus all of your energy to hitting small tasks and building habits that stick over time.
Where to start?
Life Changing Pen & Paper Activity:
Write down your goal
Write down 20 actions you believe will advance you to that goal
Commit to doing 5 of those actions daily
Create a system to track these new daily actions
Checklist on whiteboard
Reminders / notes app in phone
Accountability group with mates
etc. etc. — Just find what you know you will stick to
Hit these 5 tasks no matter what your brain is telling you — No matter how you feel
If you can commit and complete each action every single day, in my experience, it takes 2 weeks for these to become automatic habits. Your brain will have no say because it knows no other option.
Once you remove options from your arsenal, you become unstoppable. Your goals will become more achievable than you think.
To give a real example, there have been plenty of times where I have to undergo a surgery or experience a fairly serious injury.
And damn could this be a great excuse to take some rest and just take it easy for a bit. Spend more time in bed, eat a little extra just because, etc. etc.
But guess what? Your body does not care.
The strength, physique, athletic progress, discipline, I’ve built over time…it will all begin to fade…unless I alter the training and do all I can without setting myself back.
In conclusion, the goals don’t care how you feel. The work has to be done. There is simply no other option.
Hope this resonated with you, friend. It’s been on my mind a lot lately and I am hoping many can relate.
So, cheers to new habits and shutting that brain off 🙌
