Competition

How to build your competitive muscles

I grew up the youngest child in family of boys…what does that mean?

A never-ending flow of competition!

Who can win in basketball, a fight, video games, tackle football, the list goes on and on.

And as the youngest, I was constantly punching above my weight 🤣 But it’s something I will forever be grateful for.

I learned what it was like to compete among the older crowd and do everything within my power to win…even if it didn’t work out in my favor.

Fast forward some years later, I found myself competing in one of the toughest environments in sport. But it almost felt normal. I may not have been the biggest, fastest, or strongest of the pack, but I always came out to win.

Just as being a youngest brother, I didn’t always achieve what I wanted, but damn I was able to accomplish some things I will forever be proud of.

And what was the by-product? An unquenchable thirst for competition.

I believe competition can be homed in many ways and you may reap many benefits in all areas of life through it.

Actionable Steps to Build Those Competitive Muscles

  1. Set Clear Goals:

    • Define specific, measurable goals that you want to achieve in various aspects of your life, such as fitness, career, or personal development. Make sure these goals are challenging yet attainable. Constantly check in on your goals often and ask if your daily habits lend themselves to these goals.

  2. Compete Against Yourself:

    • Focus on self-improvement by setting personal benchmarks and striving to surpass them. Keep track of your progress over time and celebrate your achievements. I believe it’s important to benchmark yourself against those who have come before you and achieved what you want, but I think it’s equally important to benchmark off of your previous self. Advancement from the previous self is always the goal.

  3. Find a Workout Buddy:

    • Partner up with a friend, family member, or colleague for exercise sessions or physical activities. Friendly competition can motivate both of you to push harder and stay committed to your fitness goals. The accountability and competition will drive both parties to improve!

  4. Join a Sports Team or Club:

    • Participate in recreational sports leagues, fitness classes, or hobby groups in your community. Engaging in group activities can add a competitive element while also providing social interaction and support.

  5. Use Fitness Apps or Wearables:

    • Utilize technology to track your workouts, set challenges, and compete with friends or other users. Many fitness apps and wearables offer features that allow you to compare your progress and achievements. And what you track tends to grow. Gather data, see where you can improve, and compete to improve those metrics!

  6. Participate in Challenges:

    • Take part in fitness challenges, step challenges, or productivity challenges either individually or with a group. These challenges provide a structured way to compete against yourself or others while working towards a common goal. Can never go wrong with a 75 Hard!

  7. Gamify Daily Tasks:

    • Turn mundane tasks or daily habits into games by setting time limits, point systems, or rewards for completion. Challenge yourself to beat your previous records or compete with friends or family members.

  8. Embrace Healthy Competition:

    • Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your competitive spirit and support each other's growth and success. Engage in friendly competition that encourages mutual encouragement and camaraderie. Share your thoughts, challenges, and learnings with a group you respect.

  9. Celebrate Achievements:

    • Acknowledge and celebrate your victories, no matter how small. Reward yourself for reaching milestones and use positive reinforcement to stay motivated and engaged.

  10. Reflect and Adjust:

    • Regularly assess your progress and performance to identify areas for improvement. Learn from both successes and setbacks, and adjust your strategies accordingly to continue challenging yourself effectively.

Competition continues to drive me in every single thing I do. I believe it can be a superpower if cultivated daily. By continuing to compete, you will never become complacent. Competition will keep you coming back for more no matter what area of your life you are reflecting on. So, find what works for you and continue to build those competitive muscles!
